Of all wardrobe basics, the white shirt is the one where premium pricing rarely justifies itself. The construction is simple, the styling fairly universal, and the lifespan limited by how hard it is to keep white actually white.
What actually matters in a white shirt
Fabric weight and weave: too thin and it's see-through; too heavy and it doesn't drape. Cotton poplin around 110-130 gsm is the sweet spot. Mango Capsule Collection, Cos, M&S Autograph, and Uniqlo's Supima cotton range all hit this at £25-£60.
Cut: shoulder fit is what makes or breaks any shirt. Sleeve should sit on the shoulder bone, not drop down the arm. Try on always; don't size online.

The real reason most premium white shirts disappoint
They yellow at the underarms within months. They wrinkle in the hamper. They show every coffee splash. White is high-maintenance regardless of price; spending £200 doesn't fix that, only changes the expectation when the fix-it ironing time arrives.
Keeping white shirts white
Wash inside out, cold or 30°C, immediately after wearing (don't leave in hamper for days). Use oxygen-based whitening (Vanish Oxi-Action) every 4-5 washes; chlorine bleach weakens fibres. For underarm yellowing: pre-soak in white-vinegar-and-baking-soda solution for an hour before washing. Iron when slightly damp for the crisp finish.
The white shirt is one of the few wardrobe categories where the affordable option is genuinely competitive with the premium one. Spend the saved money on the items where quality actually compounds.
