The Three Trousers That Cover 90% of Real Weeks

The Three Trousers That Cover 90% of Real Weeks

Most women own 8-12 pairs of trousers and wear 3 of them constantly. The rest take up drawer space, get bypassed every morning, and quietly degrade. Three pairs, chosen properly, cover almost every life context.

The three categories

Tailored straight-leg

The work/event/dinner trouser. Mid-rise, sits at natural waist or just below, falls straight through the leg. ME+EM Power Stretch, Cos relaxed wool blend, M&S Magic Shaping straight. Black, navy, or charcoal — pick one. £80-£180.

Quality straight-leg jeans

The everyday casual trouser. Dark wash for versatility, raw hem or clean hem (skip distressing). Levi's Wedgie, AGOLDE Riley, Mango premium denim. £80-£150.

Wide-leg or barrel jeans

The casual-cool option that goes from school run to dinner. Light to mid-wash for contrast with the above. ARKET, & Other Stories, Whistles. £100-£200.

What this set rules out

Skinny jeans (out of fashion for most uses; still fine if they suit you specifically). Joggers (have these for home, don't count them in wardrobe). 'Smart casual' chinos that don't quite work anywhere. Linen trousers (single-season). Patterned trousers (limit one pair maximum).

Where to spend more, where to save

Tailored trousers: spend up. Cheap tailored trousers look cheap immediately and lose shape in two washes. £150 buys 5-10 years.

Jeans: middle ground. £80-120 sweet spot. Below £50 wears out fast; above £200 the marginal quality gain is small.

Wide-leg/barrel: spend modestly. The silhouette dates faster than tailored, so 2-3 years of wear is enough. £100-150.

Care that makes them last

Wash jeans cold, inside-out, no fabric softener (kills the stretch). Air dry tailored trousers; dry-clean only when necessary, not after every wear (steaming refreshes instead). Hang trousers properly (skirt hangers or trouser bars); folding kills the crease. Invest in one good iron — Tefal or Bosch around £80 — and steam regularly.

Three pairs done right cost less and look better than ten compromise pairs. Audit what you wore last month — you've likely already proven this is true.
